Combined Anglo-French Airstrike Strikes Islamic State Munitions Store in the Syrian region
Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."
In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The UN reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
